She attended Moreau Heights Elementary School and went to Collins Hill High School that is located in Gwinnett County, near Suwanee, Georgia. She played school basketball and led her school team to three consecutive state championships and became the only second junior to be named the 2007 Naismith Prep Player of the Year.

During her four-year stint at Collins, Maya led her school team to several wins and earned the distinction of the most valuable player. She completed high school in 2007 and averaged 22.7 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 4.1 steals.

Moore spent the next four years playing college basketball for the University of Connecticut. She continued to excel in the game and led Connecticut to an undefeated national championship.

Maya was drafted by Minnesota Lynx in the 2011 WNBA draft. She also became the first female basketball player signed to the Jordan Brand.
