Kris attended and graduated from Hopkins High School. He was a competitive swimmer during his youth and won several competitions. He also held the US national record for the 50-meter freestyle for 10 and under boys for 18 years.

At age 12, he began playing school basketball and led his school team to an unprecedented win, bagging the 2002 Minnesota state championship (their first in 49 years).
