Her biological parents are Jerri Renee Hastey (née Chastain) and Michael Monasterio. Growing up, she was estranged from Monasterio and apparently reluctant to reveal any details about her family. She was raised by her mother, and stepfather, Michael Hastey, who gave moral support and shared a close bonding with her. She has two sisters and two brothers, but unfortunately, her younger sister, Juliet Chastain, committed suicide after years of drug abuse.

Chastain graduated from El Camino High School and attended Sacramento City College from 1996 to 1997. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) degree from Juilliard School, New York City in 2003.
