Education and Early Career
Joel studied at a local school in his hometown. At age 15, Luc Mbah a Moute, another Yaounde native, and an NBA player discovered his talents and suggested that he would relocate to the United States.
He moved to the United States the next year and spent a year playing basketball at Montverde Academy before he was transferred to Rock School, a Christian academy, in Gainesville, Florida.
Thanks to his excellent gameplay, he got a full scholarship to the University of Kansas. He played college basketball for the Kansas Jayhawks for one year. In the season, he played 28 games, in which he averaged 8.1 rebounds, 2.6 blocks, 1.4 assists, and 11.2 points. He was also one of the 30 finalists for the Naismith College Player of the Year.
After that season he declared himself for the 2014 NBA Draft and was selected by the Philadelphia 76ers as their third overall pick. Due to injuries, he did not play in the 2014-15 season as well as in the following season.
