Pawan Kalyan was born the youngest of three children to Konidela Venkat Rao and Anjana Devi. He has two older brothers, Chiranjeevi and Nagendra Babu, who both are actors. He is the uncle to actors Ram Charan, Varun Tej, and Sai Dharam Tej.

He made his acting debut with the 1996 Telugu film Akkada Ammayi Ikkada Abbay as Kalyan.
As a director, he has directed the 2003 film Johnny which had himself playing the titular role as a Kick Boxer, alongside Renu Desai, Raghuvaran, and Raza Murad.
